Inflationary Cosmology
CD • 42 minutes • 2005
Loosely based around the most obnoxiously grandiose concept imaginable (the full arc of the existence of the universe!) the latest solo instrumental CD offering from Room 34 is an interesting voyage, to say the least. Beginning with a ripping musical interpretation of the Big Bang, followed by the formation of stars, planets, galaxies (you name it — anything in space that can collide), we then move into a suite that traces a path through human experience to today. In the end, the universe goes as it must, not with a bang, or a whimper, but a numbing wash of ambient minimalism. (It’s all a lot more fun than it sounds!)

The Dewey ‘Jone’ McNukkle Story
CD • 43 minutes • 2001
The seeds for this project were sown over the course of several years. The person known as ‘Jone’ has been a focal point for his group friends, myself included, since 1992. His multi-faceted personality (each facet accompanied by an appropriate nickname) never ceases to entertain and enrich the lives of those around him.
In early 1999, I began to contemplate a large-scale solo musical work. The exact form and theme were wholly unknown, until gradually it became obvious that in ‘Jone’ I had the ideal muse. He could inspire a wide variety of musical themes and ideas, and before long the concept gelled. Unfortunately, a lack of available equipment and time prevented the project from getting underway until late 2000, when I acquired the “missing piece” — the electronic drum kit heard throughout the album.
At last I had at my disposal all of the tools necessary to produce a complete album-length CD of instrumental rock music entirely on my own. The creative phase peaked during a stressful time of unemployment in the summer of 2001. Rather than let my frustrating job search get me down, I channeled my unfocused energy into my music, producing the majority of the material on the CD in less than a month, including the completion of 5 tracks in one day!
The result is a collection of musical ideas that I think accurately portray the many elements of a unique personality, a ‘Joneness’, that has been experienced by a select few, but can be appreciated by nearly everyone.
Christmas with Chewbacca
1999
What started as an in-joke over 6 years ago became, in bastardized form, a full-fledged Internet phenomenon this past Christmas, when someone stole my audio track of Chewbacca “singing” a jazzed-up arrangement of “Silent Night” for a YTMND page. Apparently it even made WGN Radio and Fox News. Get my full rant at the Room 34 Curiosities site.
